Popis: The focal mechanism for the M b = 5.9 earthquake which occurred on May 11, 1976, at φ = 51.60° S , λ = 139.76° E , is of a strike slip type with a component of thrust faulting. The rupture plane is inferred from the distribution of epicenters that delineate a N—S-striking fault zone. The slip motion along this plane is of sinistral shear which agrees with the northward migration of the Australian plate relative to the Antarctic plate.
