The development of PWRs in Japan has entered the period of maturity. However, circumstances around nuclear power generation have been drastically changing. As LWRs are expected to play an extended dominant role during the 21st century, there have been increasing demands for nuclear power generation, such as the enhancement of its reliability, the cost performance improvement, and a contribution to easing environmental problems. Given these circumstances, the development of a reactor well suited to the coming century has become an important task to be achieved.This paper summarizes the results of the comparative study of development status of future reactors and the social backgrounds at home and abroad. The paper also reviews the up-to-date status of the development of next generation PWR by nuclear power generation industry. The needs of society and of the utilities were surveyed in order to develop next generation PWR. This paper suggests plant concepts, specifications, systems and so on based on the survey. Furthermore, the paper presents future objectives to be focused on, having been identified in the course of the review. |
