First report on the new study of the unique first-floor continuous galleries, which appear to originate in late 13th/early 14th century. They have stone undercrofts with timber-framing over. They follow the line of Roman ruins and seem to have arisen through an economic boom seen in Chester during Edward I's N Welsh castle-building campaigns. Brief gazetteer of individual houses. (An earlier version of this paper was published in limited edition by Chester City Council & Cheshire County Council in 1987: no ISBN. See also 89/775.)
