This paper examines the relationship between outward FDI and exports using cross-sectional data in South Korea and Japan, In both countries, outward FDI was found not to decrease exports. Nor were there any significantly positive effects of outward FDI on exports. The tendency of investing abroad in order to retain foreign export markets is greater in Japan than in South Korea, implying that outward FDI in South Korea is more of a cost-oriented type, while Japanese outward FDI is more of a market-oriented type.
