Bovine Tuberculosis (BTB), caused by Mycobacterium bovis is a contagious infectious disease of domesticated and wild animals and humans, which spreads extensively in populations before clinical signs and the effects of the disease become visible. It has a worldwide distribution and is one of the most important illnesses of cattle. The World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) lists BTB as a notifiable disease because of its socio-economic and public health importance. However, few countries in Africa conduct BTB eradication schemes. Therefore, its importance in livestock and humans remains largely unknown. In this chapter, the status of BTB in Africa and challenges ahead in its future control are highlighted. |
