Popis: Although the current trend in simulation is towards six-degree-of-freedom modeling, it is explained why simplified flight mechanics still offer useful benefits in applications where the external behavior of the flight vehicles is the primary interest. The viability of the approach is demonstrated by comparisons with 6-DOF test calculations for a generic fighter and a missile. The bulk of the paper describes a programmable, multi-mode three-channel autopilot for performance models, which can be used for example in model validations or in support of flight path optimizations. The operation of several modes is demonstrated by sample cases.
