A review of methods was reported in the period 1995–2003 for the preparation of aryl- and vinylarsenic compounds, and where relevant their antimony and bismuth analogs. Methods are given for the synthesis of organoarsines and -arsoranes through a number of processes, all of which involve carbon–metal formation. They include transmetallation using other organometallic reagents, displacement of suitable leaving groups in an organic substrate by metal reagents, and addition reactions. A small number of preparative reactions are described in which an existing organic group in the organometal compound is modified through cycloaddition or rearrangement reactions, and other methods are reported that proceed through chemoselective reduction. Methods are provided for the synthesis of heteroaromatic compounds containing arsenic, antimony, or bismuth atoms within the ring. Most references deal with the preparation of heterocycles containing nonbenzenoid rings, and heterocycles, such as diazaarsinines, thiaarsoles, diazaarsoles, and arsadiphospholes, including arsaphospholides and their ferrocene complexes, with at least one other heteroatom in the ring. Methods are given for the preparation and interconversion of arsenic halides, compounds with arsenicoxygen bonds, including arsenic, arsinic, and arsonic acid derivatives and their sulfur and selenium analogs, the preparation of compounds containing arsenicnitrogen bonds, and those with the heteroatom bonded to other group 15 elements, like pnictonides and phosphorus. The syntheses of metal derivatives of arsenic, antimony, and bismuth compounds are also described. |
