The Abhidharma account of conscious experience faces some serious challenges not only because of the absence of selves or persons, but also because of its commitment to mereological nihilism and the doctrine of momentariness. This chapter presents the account of conscious experience and notes the challenges that arise due to the latter commitments. These challenges question the reality, coherence, and empirical viability of the Abhidharma view of conscious experience and thought. On behalf of Vasubandhu and Abhidharma philosophers the author develops the Abhidharma interpretation of conscious experience and shows that the account can withstand these challenges and deserves serious consideration. |
