Popis: The biliary system is the drainage system of the liver into the small bowel. Bile drains from the liver into the hepatic ducts. The left and right hepatic ducts join to form the common hepatic duct, that is joined by the cystic duct to form the common bile duct, which empties into the second portion of the duodenum via the ampulla of Vater. Bile flows down the common hepatic duct into the cystic duct to be stored in the gallbladder. The gallbladder contracts in response to cholecystokinin (CCK), a hormone secreted by the duodenum in response to fatty compounds and proteins reaching it. CCK causes relaxation of the sphincter of Oddi, allowing the flow of bile excreted by the gallbladder into the small bowel.
