Previous studies [1, 2] have shown that the composition and the activities of enzymes involved in drug metabolism in LEC rats are quite similar to those observed in hyperplastic foci and nodules induced by chemical carcinogens [3, 4]. Dietary deficiencies of methionine and choline have been shown to enhance the activities of several hepatocarcinogens, and ethionine is known to be both a hepatocarcinogen and an anti-metabolite of methionine. Therefore, we thought choline deficiency and ethionine treatment might provide useful model systems. In the present study, we used immunochemical and biochemical methods to investigate the hepatic enzyme alterations in LEC rats fed a choline-deficient diet or in LEC rats treated with ethionine. |
