Cellular death in the course of a virus infection is usually related to the multiplication of the virions in the cells but it is not actually established whether it is the synthesis of the structural components or that of specific cytotoxic proteins which are involved in the cytopathic effect. At the same time, the significance of the cut-off of the cellular metabolism and its role in the process of cell necrosis are not yet clearly understood. The acute degenerative hepatitis induced by frog virus 3 (FV 3) in mice provides evidence that necrosis of hepatocytes can be induced by structural viral proteins and that the switch off of the cellular metabolism may be related to this necrosis. |
