The evidence from epidemiological studies of an ecological nature indicate that the incidence of cancer of the gastro-intestinal tract can be affected by the chemical pollution of water.1 Frequently, of the carcinogenic organic chemicals that can be detected in water, the most dangerous is chloroform because of its relative high concentration. This is ironic, since the source is often chlorine, used to control bacteria in water and to prevent disease. However, if natural and/or synthetic organic chemicals are polluting the water, they evidently contribute to a chemical reaction involving chlorine to produce chloroform. |
