Popis: The main method of reclaiming residues in the mining industry, particularly in Southern Africa, has been hydraulic remining using high-pressure water-monitor guns. Mechanical remining with either truck and shovel or by special-purpose reclaimers as well as dredging has also been used. Hydraulic remining is generally best suited to reclamation of hydraulically deposited tailings and fine sands, whereas coarser residues are better remined by mechanical means. Factors such as the degree of saturation, in situ shear strength and toughness, and climatic factors play a role in the selection of the best remining method. In addition, where control of percent solids is important, hydraulic and mechanical methods are preferred. This chapter provides an update on modern practice in hydro remining of gold tailings from the broad perspective of a mining services provider.
