New high-current, high-precision microprocessor-controlled power supplies, built by Alpha Scientific Electronics of Hayward, CA, have been installed at the Los Alamos National Laboratory Accelerator Complex. Twenty-four power supplies have been ordered, the first of which is a 600 kilowatt supply installed in the Magnet Measurement Facility. Tests were conducted on this supply to verify adherence to specification and to ascertain ultimate long-term stability and performance. Specification of these supplies requires current regulation of 0.002% of maximum output and long-term stability of 0.001% of full current rating over a twelve-hour period. A large (twenty ton) dipole magnet was used as a load to fully exercise the supply up to its 3000 Ampere capability. Test design is described and results are presented. > |
