Popis: PREFACE Ulrich von Hutten, German Knight, was in no respect a lovable person. Diseased in body and cantankerous of disposition he led a life of persistent and bitter warfare against a succession of foes. As a child he was at odds with his father over the latter's determination to make him a priest, and at the age of 17, in the year 1505, he ran away from the Benedictine monastery of Fulda to circumvent this purpose. Adversities gathered around him like filings around a magnet, and his life for the next four years consisted of wandering from place to place, usually in dire financial straits and regularly engaged in some controversy or other. This period of his quarrelsome career culminated in his violent ejection at the hands of hostile colleagues from a teaching position which he had secured at Greifswald.
