Popis: Ocean is the source of precious natural resources of the Earth. Marine system provides us with many novel products that having antimicrobial properties. These compounds may give out a model system in new medicine discovery. The aim of the present study is to characterize the bioactive compound produced by Micrococcus luteus that has been isolated from surface of ship hull (MV-Balavan) at Cochin Port Trust. Cochin, Kerala. The total heterotrophic bacteria were subjected to screening for biofilm formation. More biofilm producer was identified as Micrococcus sp. Exopolysacharide production were optimized at different environmental factors. Exopolysacharide were characterized by SEM, UV–Vis spectroscopy, and FT-IR spectroscopy. Antibacterial activities of EPS were also studied. Extraction of the pigment from Micrococcus luteus was characterized by UV–Vis spectroscopy, TLC, HPTLC and FT-IR spectroscopy. Antibacterial and antifungal activities of the pigment were checked against clinical isolates. In vitro cytotoxic activity and anti-oxidant activity of the pigment were analysed. The present study indicated that, Micrococcus luteus has been able to produce high amount of exopolysacharide. The pigment isolated may use as antibacterial, antifungal drugs in future. Also it has ability to cytotoxicity and anti-oxidant activity. The pigment has the property of absorbing UVA rays and can be used as a sunscreen agent. The vital compounds from Micrococcus luteus can be used in medicine field and also in industries.
