A historical overview of copper behavior in geological spent nuclear fuel disposal is presented. The KBS-3 method was approved as the reference method by the Swedish government in 1984. The KBS-3 copper canister has an external, self-standing copper shell and an internal structural nodular cast iron insert. Degradation mechanisms of copper are associated with sulfide present in groundwater, in buffer and locally produced by microbiological activity. General corrosion, radiation-induced corrosion, localized corrosion, stress corrosion cracking, and hydrogen-induced cracking of copper are considered. Creep ductility of pure oxygen-free Cu-OF was low, and therefore the choice at present is oxygen-free copper with phosphorous alloying (Cu-OFP, 30…100 ppm P). |
