Popis:	The factors responsible for the isolation or identification of (carbenic) phosphenium and (alkenic) tricoordinate phosphonium salts are discussed. Structural features, reactivity and observations of intramolecular rearrangement are presented, which illustrate some of the requirements for stability in each case.
