Popis: | Maturing high-power solid-state laser technology is fueling an interest in hybrid laser gas metal arc (laser-GMA) welding for shipyard fabrication activities. Hybrid laser-GMA welding has demonstrated an ability to both reduce the distortion of thin steel butt welds and increase the production rate of pipe welds relative to conventional joining techniques, both leading to improved affordability. The paper discusses the potential benefits of hybrid laser-GMA welding, results of experiments to address both distortion and production rate, and provides an overview of a hybrid pipe welding system recently installed in a shipyard. |
