Popis: The concept for a continuous chromatograph utilizing a rotating annulus was presented over 25 years ago. Such a system with a stationary feed point and stationary effluent ports can accept a continuous feed stream and separate it into a series of constituent streams that appear as separate helical bands in the annulus. A theoretical plate concept can be used to mathematically describe the system. Recent developments for continuous liquid chromatography include the addition of gas overpressure for higher pressure operation and the use of segmenting spacers at the feed entry to allow gradient elution. Molecular sieves and ion-exchange systems are being investigated for utility in several specific separations.
