Popis: The first scientific agency of the U.S. government, the U.S. Coast Survey, was approved by Congress in 1807 for the purposes of hydrographic survey and nautical charting. The survey’s origins, early struggles, and the career of the survey’s founder, Ferdinand Hassler, are discussed.
