The role of the solid is very important, a) as a sensitizer in many systems whereby holes and electrons can be made available for interaction with adsorbed species; b) as a catalyst when such processes as H atom recombination can be facilitated through the reverse spillover effect, and c) by acting as a means of concentrating the reactants through adsorption.
