On the formation and morphology of UPt3 whiskers

Popis: We describe our observations on the unusual formation and morphology of whiskers of the intermetallic uranium compound UPt3 (MgCd3 hexagonal-type of structure). Needle-like whiskers of this compound grow spontaneously from the stoichiometric UPt3 melt at fast cooling on a water-cooled copper hearth. A “1 - s” screw dislocation growth mechanism is suggested. Most of the whiskers have a regular shape with a typical cross-section in the form of an equilateral trapezium. The c-axis is always found to be parallel to the whisker axis. Lattice parameters from Weisenberg X-ray measurements are: a = 5.7530 (4) A, c = 4.9010 (4) A.
