The final state $p{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{+}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{+}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ produced in ${\ensuremath{\pi}}^{+}p$ scattering at 910 $\frac{\mathrm{MeV}}{c}$ was studied. A total of 82 events were identified as belonging to that final state yielding a cross section of 0.43\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.06 mb. The data indicate that this final state contains the ${N}^{*}(1238)$. The ${\ensuremath{\pi}}^{+}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{+}$ and ${\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ensuremath{-}}p$ mass spectra are consistent with Lorentz-invariant phase space, but the ${\ensuremath{\pi}}^{+}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ mass spectrum shows an enhancement at a mass of 400 MeV. The data are compared with the predictions of a simple isobar model. |
