Pathological protein citrullination has been associated with a range of diseases including multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer’s disease, rheumatoid arthritis (RA), psoriasis, prion disease, liver fibrosis and cancers. This review will focus primarily on studies that showed association of citrullination in the cardiovascular system and citrullinated-linked alterations that further could explain the cardiomyocyte morphology and contraction disruption in heart failure, especially when there is an autoimmune component. As a result, we will discuss the critical knowledge gaps that need to be addressed to provide mechanistic insight into the potential roles of protein citrullination in heart failure development. |
