Variations of the cytochromic spectrum of anaerobically grown yeast as a function of its growth phases 1. 1. The reduced absorption spectrum of anaerobically grown yeast during its exponential-growth phase is characterized at — 190° by three α bands at respectively 552.5 mμ, 558 mμ, and 574.5 mμ. This spectrum resembles the absorption spectrum at — 190° of the microsomal fraction of the hepatic cell. Under the influence of oxygen the c and ( a + a 3 ) components are synthetized in a few hours; it is not possible to ascertain whether or not the c 1 and b components are identical with the corresponding anaerobic components. 2. 2. At the end of the growth phase the components at 552.5 mμ and 558 mμ disappear and the component at 574.5 mμ shows a marked increase while two new components at α = 585 m μ and α = 630 m μ are detected the spectrum. In this case oxygen induces within a few minutes the synthesis of the classical components of the aerobic spectrum, synthesis of the b and c 1 components preceding synthesis of the c and ( a + a 3 ) components. |
