Observations on an unusual form of reproduction in Porphyra (Rhodophyceae, Bangiales)

Popis:	The development of the spores of a recently recognized species of Porphyra, P. papenfussi Krish., has been studied in laboratory culture. Vegetative cells in certain areas of the mature thallus divide longitudinally into four carpogonia-like cells with long projections suggestive of trichogynes. After shedding, these large cells divide into many small spores from which a conchocelis phase with conchosporangia develops. Three chromosomes have been seen in the vegetative cells of the foliose stage, in the cells which divide to give ‘spermatia’, and in the cells of the conchocelis filaments.
