Popis: This chapter explores fine-grained accounts of trials against the Jewish community in Mexico City in the same period, to trace how the Inquisition used information extracted in the torture chamber to unravel a network of Judaizers, or crypto-Jews, nominal Christians who were practicing Judaism covertly. It focuses on the eleven tortures committed in this second wave, which were of an entirely different sort than the preceding tortures. They were corroborative, not exploratory. The chapter also provides a snapshot of some of the mutual accusations that occurred over the course of this second wave of trials. It pays attention to three patterns that become immediately apparent. The first is that torture occurred toward the tail end of this wave of trials. Second, those tortured had already been identified as Judaizers by multiple others prior to their torture. Third, torture provided no new names.
