The close similarity ofthe natural environments of Tamil Nadu (India) and eastern Tanzania is demonstrated and the current contrast in their population density and land use is related to their divergent cultural histories. It is suggested that these derive from early patterns of circulation of trade and cultures. The relevance for Tanzania of Tamilnad irrigation practices is considered, as is the comparative study of the two regions to our understanding of the long-term factors influencing economic and social development. |
