Young male mice (30 days of age) of two inbred strains (C57BL/6J and A/J) were evaluated on a water submersion test under different water temperature conditions (55, 65, 75, 85, 95, 105, or 115°F) and different tail weight loads (1, 2, or 3 g: 30 g body weight). The extreme water temperatures, particularly at the higher temperatures, and the heavy tail weight loadings resulted in decreased time to submersion for both strains of mice. In comparing strains, the A/J strain had consistently longer time to submersion than the C57BL/6J strain. These results are discussed in relation to the available comparative data utilizing this performance measure, and to the behavioral and physiological mechanisms which may account for the superiority of this albino strain. |
