Several species of submerged, aquatic macrophytes have become noxious weeds in eutrified rivers and impoundments in South Africa. Potamogeton pectinatus L. is one of the most extensive and troublesome of these and it has not been amenable to mechanical or herbicidal control methods. The introduction of Chinese grass carp, Ctenopharyngodon idella (Val.) has brought P. pectinatus under biological control within two years in two lakes. In addition, the fish has reduced infestations of two species of Lagarosiphon to acceptable levels. |
