Two different wind turbine blade designs are proposed and modeled using a free-wake, vortex lattice method, the Code for Axial and Crossflow TUrbine Simulation, CACTUS. The two designs have the same thrust coefficient as predicted by blade element momentum theory but different distributed loads across the span of the blade. In this way, the sensitivity of the wake structure due to spatial loading differences was investigated, all while keeping the integrated total drag force constant between the two designs. The first blade, design A, maximized power coefficient at a tip speed ratio of 9. The second blade, design B, increased induction over the inner 75% of the blade span, and unloaded the outer 25%. The wake of design B showed faster recovery of freestream momentum, over 10 rotor radii sooner than design A in uniform inflow. |
