Popis: This chapter examines the problems raised by the ‘middle party’ interpretation and the negotiations which preceded the Treaty of Leake in August 1318. The origins of the ‘middle party’ interpretation can be traced back to the pioneer work of Bishop William Stubbs, who argued in his Constitutional History of England (1875) that the indenture of 24 November 1317 was the basis of an alliance between Aymer de Valence and Bartholomew de Badlesmere on one hand, and Roger Damory on the other. The chapter first considers the ‘middle party’ interpretations of Stubbs, T. F. Tout, and J. Conway Davies before discussing the question of whether Pembroke and Badlesmere were founders of a ‘middle party’. It also analyses the role of the magnates in the ‘middle party’ and concludes with an assessment of the settlement that was reached in the Treaty of Leake and at the York Parliament of 1318.
