This chapter introduces communication as an analytical tool for a more nuanced understanding of sustainable development. Communication is approached through the field of ‘Communication for Development and Social Change’ (CDSC), which provides a systematic connection between communication and development. Drawing on some key lessons from the field of CDSC and from theories of interpersonal and collaborative communication, the chapter develops the concept of weak communication, a new concept that captures the less visible social relations that underpin the global food market. The concept of weak communication is employed as a novel theoretical tool for the study of sustainable development in the context of global food networks. |
