This chapter explains the basic idea of collective bargaining. It considers collective bargaining as a powerful tool that workers can use to assert their rights, share in governance of the institutions they are part of, and reshape rules, processes, policies, and systems to bring about greater fairness and better lives for all. It also describes collective bargaining as a practice that people can use to transform the ways in which neighborhoods, cities, school and health-care systems, government agencies, and multinational corporations behave. The chapter looks at some facts about the antilabor bias that permeates too many corners of the educational system and the mass media in the United States.
