Popis: Exploring the neurocognitive correlates of arithmetic can complement traditional behavioral studies and contribute to our knowledge about the underlying mechanisms. However, due to methodological restrictions, neuroimaging studies usually use single-digit rather than multi-digit arithmetic as well as simplified paradigms (yes/no) instead of open response formats. Thus, the neurocognitive underpinnings of multi-digit arithmetic have been rarely addressed in research so far. Functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) enables the implementation of ecologically valid production paradigms in arithmetic. In this fNIRS study, we aim to investigate whether the difficulty of multi-digit arithmetic is mainly processed in domain-general frontal areas or also in domain-specific parietal areas. A minimum required sample size of N = 50 adults is estimated for the study. During fNIRS measurements, arithmetic tasks will be conducted including addition with 0, 1 or 2 carry operations and subtraction with 0, 1 or 2 borrow operations. Additionally, working memory, arithmetic fluency, state and trait math anxiety, test anxiety, math self-concept, and math motivation will be assessed.
