Popis: This paper discusses the commercial importance of ride quality to the InterCity traveller and describes current technical developments and their application. Options of improving ride quality of existing vehicles are outlined together with the developments in active suspensions which will be needed by the next generation of high-speed vehicles for operation on existing tracks. The author concludes by considering the likely impact on bogie and suspension specific specifications as a result of the separation of technical and commercial responsibility for track and trains currently underway in a number of European countries. For the business engineer, ride quality is a commercial requirement which must be translated into a performance specification. This immediately raises the question, ‘How can ride quality be defined so that engineering parameters reflect the perceptions and aspirations of the customer?’
