Popis:	Mortality during the last decades has not changed significantly despite advanced techniques for monitoring and treatment.1 In patients subjected to major surgery a mortality of about 5 percent has been reported, whereas mortality increases to 15 percent if treatment in the intensive care unit is required. The major cause of death in these patients is due to multiple organ failure. In order to improve survival of these patients monitoring of cell function in the peripheral tissue and gastrointestinal tract could be of value.
