Popis: The attachment of ASCII-based terminals to EBCDIC-based hosts that use the 3270 device communication protocol requires the controller responsible for protocol conversion (the “front-end processor”) also to provide emulation for the supported devices. Usually such a controller must also include a means of customizing certain emulation parameters, thus allowing the user to add support for new terminal types. Terminal emulation is, however, a real-time task, and must not be allowed to create noticeable delays for the user. Particularly critical in this respect is the parsing of terminal input. This paper describes an effective method of parsing ASCII keyboard input that is based on a hierarchical table with hash tables used as subtables. The method has been used in a product that provides flexible attachment of ASCII devices to IBM S/370 systems.
