Popis: Adhesion and chemical stability tests were used to investigate graphite coated with TiN and TiC by chemical vapor deposition. Pin-pull tests were used to determine adhesion of the coatings and the failure stresses were analyzed by Weibull statistical analysis. All pull tests resulted in fracture of the graphite substrate. The data showed a good fit to the two-parameter Weibull expression, with failure strength near 16.4–17.6 MPa and Weibull moduli of 9.3 and 8.5 for TiN- and TiC-coated graphite, respectively. The coated specimens were exposed to a corrosive molten salt, CaCl 2 , and a liquid metal alloy (Zn-10 wt.% Mg) at 800 °C for 168 h to determine corrosion resistance. No reaction was detected by scanning electron microscopy or energy-dispersive X-ray. Thus, graphite coated with TiC and TiN by chemical vapor deposition is promising for use as a container material for pyrochemical processing of certain rare-earth and nuclear metals, where chemical inertness and a good match of thermal expansion coefficients are required.
