In the following article we present the application of the Eurocode rules for calculating the effective length of columns in single-storey buildings. Assuming the same effective lengths for cantilevers (i.e. l0 =2 lcol) and the construction columns, as in the example, will not always be correct. The problem of calculating the effective length mostly presents itself when using the simplified method. In the exact method it is not required to determine the effective lengths. This is why it is advisable while designing to use the exact method based on second order analysis and taking into account the nominal stiffness. |
