Popis:	This article gives a brief historical introduction to standards of length and reviews the present situation regarding these standards, including the proposed optical definition of the metre. The author is a Principal Research Officer in the Division of Metrology, National Standards Laboratory, C.S.I.R.O., Sydney. This Division is responsible for the maintenance of the Standards of Length of the Commonwealth.
