Cancer is, today, one of the greatest problems for the world’s population. Globally, 8% of all deaths are caused by cancer [1], and in the developed countries this percentage is even higher: in Europe, for example, it is over 22% [2]. Each year there are approximately 7 million new cancer patients worldwide and about 5 million people die [3, 4]. About half of the people suffering cancer are in developing countries. In the literature it is estimated that there are currently about 14 million people living with cancer [4–6]. In the developed countries 67% of the male and 60% of the female cancer patients die as a result of their disease. In developing countries cancer mortality is even higher and, because of the increasing longevity of the population, cancer mortality will increase by about 40% between now and the year 2000. |
