Summary Thymectomy was performed immediately upon hatching on normal chickens and chickens with hereditary muscular dystrophy. Results of the histo-chemical analyses of muscles of thymectomized birds, examined up to 259 days post-operatively, focus on three important phenomena (1) neonatal thymectomy can arrest or delay the metabolic differentiation of fast-twitch glycolytic fibres (pectoralis major) of normal genotype (2) the observed alteration mimics a similar event characterizing the abnormal differentiation inherent in the pectoralis major of dystrophic genotype (3) neonatal thymectomy does not affect the metabolic differentiation of the pectoralis major of dystrophic genotype. We suggest that during normal development the thymus gland plays a role in preparing muscles for a transition from foetal to adult metabolic activities and that such a thymic-muscle interaction is faulty with muscle of dystrophic genotype. |
