Saint-Simon introduced the subject of sociology to the early nineteenth-century world. He was grappling with two revolutionary forces that were reshaping the world of which he was a part: the French Revolution, which had to do with basic political rights, and the Industrial Revolution, which was ushering in a whole new way of producing goods and services and was radically changing the way people related to such production and to each other. This revolution would set in motion the struggle for economic rights. These revolutions continue, and Saint-Simon saw the need for a new science to study these social phenomena. He called it "social physics" after the model of Newtonian mechanical physics.
