Popis: | A major obstacle to the more widespread use of computer methods in humanistic disciplines is the difficulty and expense of acquiring textual material in machine-readable form. Although more and more humanists are aware of and interested in computer methods applicable to their research, the difficulties of text conversion effectively block the way to electronic assistance. But there has been some progress, and there are signs of breakthroughs on several fronts. While this paper does not attempt to suggest any one solution to this problem, it does attempt to lay down criteria of a good system for converting text to machine-readable form, and it measures ten methods of conversion against these criteria. By this approach it attempts to cover the principal options open today to those who wish to prepare and process texts. My conclusions are based on experience gained as director of a pilot project with the task of finding the best way of converting The London Stage, an 8,000-page calendar of events at the theatres from 1660-1800, into a computer-accessible information bank for scholars in history, literature, and drama. |
