Popis: | The use of intradialystic parenteral nutrition (IDPN) remains a debated therapy option for treatment of protein-calorie malnutrition in the hemodialysis population. The effect of IDPN on blood urea nitrogen (BUN) levels, albumin (Alb) levels, total protein (TP), and caloric and protein intake for 8 patients (3 men and 5 women) was evaluated. The mean patient age was 62.4 years (range, 34 to 76 years). Before initiation of IDPN, all patients had decreased levels of Alb, BUN, and TP. Study results were based on 3 to 6 months of IDPN therapy. After initiation of IDPN, Alb levels showed a significant increase by month 2 of treatment (3.10 ± .28 to 3.54 ± .24 gm/dL; P P ± .0006), whereas BUN levels improved significantly by month 1 (54.4 ± 18.6 to 77.4 ± 25.8 mg/dL; P = .0027). In addition, 88% of patients had an increased TP (NS) level and 100% of patients had increased caloric and protein intake ( P = .008 and P = .0156, respectively). In this patient population, improvements were shown in biochemical parameters (Alb, BUN, TP), caloric and protein intake, and patient appetite after IDPN was initiated. We conclude that IDPN was an effective therapy option for these hemodialysis patients. |
