Popis: A wave of building of round kilns in Kent and Sussex took place as hop growing developed strongly during the first half of the 19th century. The density of hop growing and drying in and around Canterbury is illustrated. The roundel was a natural evolution from the earlier projecting cone out of the roof. Jahn Read of Horsmonden claimed to be the inventor of the round kiln and he did much to promote the model. His influence was extensive. The Journals of the Royal Agricultural Society published detailed papers on hop farming and drying, for example by Samuel Rutley showing complex hot air pipework circulating around the kiln.
