Popis: CatMonitor is a web-based community risk monitoring and awareness platform intended to provide homeowners, businesses, risk managers and government institutions in Southeastern European countries the tools and information required to facilitate understanding of property risk exposure to catastrophic events such as earthquakes, floods and extreme weather. In Southeastern Europe, natural catastrophes can result in significant damage and economic loss. However, the level of catastrophe insurance penetration as means to mitigate and recover some of the economic losses in the region still remains low. One of the primary reasons for this is lack of awareness and understanding of among the region’s consumers, which translates into poor demand for insurance coverage. With the view of delivering information to the people in the Southeast European region in critical times before, during, and after a disaster, the CatMonitor portal provides a user-friendly interface that can engage a widespread audience to visualize, interact and contribute to the understanding and measurement of catastrophe risk. This is achieved by combining state-of-the-art risk modeling technology and a mapping interface that allows users to view and learn about hazards, buildings and natural catastrophe risks. Geographic Information System (GIS) - based mapping allows users to pinpoint buildings or facilities and view them in relation to hazards and risks. Bing map technology is incorporated as a part of the system, allowing for a map, satellite or a bird’s eye view of various cities and towns in the Balkans. CatMonitor platform and its overall vision is being developed and implemented by Europa Reinsurance Facility Ltd. (Europa Re), a Swiss – based regional catastrophe insurance services provider and reinsurer for Southeast Europe. Supported by the governments of Macedonia, Serbia and Albania, the World Bank, GEF, SECO, UNISDR and EU, one of Europa Re’s primary objectives is to educate the public about the exposure of their properties and businesses to catastrophe risks through the use of its web-based platform and crowdsourcing.
