Popis: In a retrospective study, initial diagnosis, method of surgical treatment and development of the disease were evaluated in 118 patients with a basal cell carcinoma of the head and neck. Follow-up in 107 cases revealed tumour recurrence in 44 patients (41%) despite radical surgery with resection of important organs in 97 out of the 118 patients. Only 63 patients were free of tumour (59%). In 20 patients a second recurrence and in 12 patients a third recurrence was observed. In cases when bony structures were involved the recurrence rate was 71.4%. In a comparative study group of 6,932 patients with “simple” basal cell carcinomas the recurrence rate amounted to only 1.9%.The hypothesis of primary incurability is suggested and at the same time it is pointed out that radical surgery may improve patients’ quality of life.
